In an interview with CNN, Matthew Rooney, Bush Institute-SMU Economic Growth Initiative Managing Director, explained what priorities Vice President Harris should address with Honduras' new president.
Vice President Kamala Harris visited Honduras on January 27 to attend the inauguration of President-elect Xiomara Castro, and getting his buy-in on her plan to address the root causes of migration to the U.S. southern border.
Matthew Rooney, Bush Institute-SMU Economic Growth Initiative Managing Director, spoke with CNN about the importance of the trip and its meaning. He called the trip an “important gesture,” and explained why the trip was necessary.
“The arrival of a new president in Honduras is an important opportunity to shape the conversation with the region and to engage,” he told CNN reporter Priscilla Alvarez.
Rooney pointed out that previous administrations have had challenges navigating the governments of El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala, and a Vice President Harris’ trip is a starting point for conversations.
