One of the most unique features of the Bush Center’s Home for the Holidays exhibit is 18 scale model replicas of presidential homes that were created in 2001. The replicas were detailed and built to scale by the carpenters, plumbers and other White House staff from the original family home plans of many of the Nation's Presidents and displayed on mantles and tables throughout the rooms of the White House. In the Bush Center exhibit, these same model homes are presented with original photos alongside the replicated White House Blue Room tree.
The houses range from modest childhood homes to grand estates. They include George Washington's Mount Vernon, Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello, Franklin D. Roosevelt's Hyde Park, Abraham Lincoln’s home in Springfield, Illinois and a replica of Lyndon B. Johnson's ranch in Texas.
Because of heightened security in 2001, the White House did not offer public tours during the holidays, so Mrs. Bush had three of the replica homes exhibited at the White House Visitor Center. The Bush Center’s special exhibit now gives all Americans the opportunity to see firsthand these special presidential homes featured in the 2001 White House decorations.
