The President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) is up for reauthorization by the end of this year. The program has saved over 25 million lives and allowed over 5.5 million babies to be born HIV-free. The bipartisanship of the American Congress and its relationship with four presidents has made this program incredibly successful. Reauthorization provides an opportunity to reflect on PEPFAR’s success, what didn’t work, and what still needs to be done. After PEPFAR is reauthorized, Congress can continue to drive programmatic improvement and evolution essential to PEPFAR’s success.
