David J. Kramer, Executive Director of the George W. Bush Institute, joined PBS News Hour to discuss the latest developments in the negotiations to end the war in Ukraine following President Donald Trump’s meetings with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders in Washington, D.C., and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska.
“I think the display of unity and solidarity with the European leaders together with President Trump, with Zelenksy, sent a very powerful signal that Putin’s efforts to sow divisions in the transatlantic alliance are not going to succeed,” Kramer said.
Kramer explained that what happens in Ukraine matters both in the U.S. and around the world. He said the Chinese Communist Party is watching the war closely to see whether the West will sustain its support for Ukraine as China considers its next steps in Taiwan. “This is a war that is not just between Russia and Ukraine,” Kramer said. “It’s not just a European conflict. This is a war that has global implications.”
