Dallas, TX and Washington, DC – Today, the George W. Bush Institute and the ONE Campaign launched More Than a Match – a new digital experience in which soccer meets trade, innovation, and opportunity. The new platform explores the story of how the continent of Africa and the three 2026 World Cup host countries – the United States, Canada, and Mexico – have a history of strong connections – even before the first match kicks off on June 11 between Mexico and South Africa.
“Ten African nations are competing in North America this summer,” said Elizabeth Hoffman, the Executive Director of North America at ONE. “This is a moment to celebrate, and a reminder of how much more the host countries can do to match that energy with real trade and investment commitments.”
Together, the Bush Institute and ONE Campaign brought the story on connections between the host countries and countries of Africa to life through an interactive experience that showcases the depth of their relationships. North America and Africa have a powerful relationship built through trade partnerships, educational and cultural exchanges, and innovative collaborations.
Key findings include:
- Total trade between the United States and Africa at $83.4 billion.
- Total trade between Canada and Africa at $18.3 billion.
- Total trade between Mexico and Africa at $3.4 billion.
The project also highlights the role of local communities in strengthening these ties. Fourteen of the 16 host cities have sister-city ties with African communities, while the African diaspora remainsone of the most under-leveraged assets for relationship-building and economic growth. More Than a Match also explores strategies for what cities, states, and provinces can do to benefit even more from their relationships with the African continent.
