The incredible story of the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, nicknamed the Six Triple Eight, comes to Engage at the Bush Center, presented by NexPoint.
The program follows the December 20 release of Netflix’s The Six Triple Eight, a film that tells the story of WWII’s only Women’s Army Corps unit of color and “the quiet heroism of everyday individuals.” Working out of a warehouse in Birmingham, England, the motto of the battalion was “No mail, low morale.” While facing racist and misogynistic treatment, the women of the Six Triple Eight served their country with honor and distinction, clearing a backlog of 17 million pieces of soldier mail in three months. Given an extraordinary mission and united in their determination, these unsung heroes delivered hope and shattered barriers.
Join us for an inspiring conversation with Nicole Avant, one of the producers of the Netflix film; Milauna Jackson who plays Captain Campbell in the Netflix film; and Retired Army Col. Edna Cummings, who produced a documentary on the Six Triple Eight in 2019 and has passionately – and successfully – advocated for the battalion to be recognized with the Congressional Gold Medal.
